Phil Collins is one of the most successful musicians in history, with eight Grammy Awards and over 100 million albums sold both as a solo artist and as a member of Genesis. Born in London in 1951, he developed a passion for music early and taught himself to play drums largely by instinct.
He joined Genesis in 1970 as their drummer and later became lead singer, helping lead the band to major success. Collins also enjoyed a hugely popular solo career with hits like In the Air Tonight.
In recent years, health issues have prevented him from playing drums, and during Genesis’s reunion tour his son Nicholas took over drumming duties. Though the past few years have been challenging, Collins says his health is now stable and he has largely stepped back from touring.
