Swollen Feet and Ankles: What It Can Mean
Swollen feet and ankles are often caused by prolonged sitting or standing, travel, pregnancy, medications, or temporary fluid retention (edema).
However, swelling can sometimes be linked to conditions such as blood clots (DVT), heart or kidney problems, vein disorders, infections, arthritis, gout, or injuries.
Sudden swelling in one leg, especially with pain, warmth, or tenderness, should be checked promptly.
Seek emergency care if swelling occurs with chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, dizziness, or coughing up blood.
Mild swelling may improve with movement and leg elevation, but persistent, painful, worsening, or unexplained swelling should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
